Before the Whitsuntide holiday disappeared in the 1960's - 1970's, it was the custom of church members to demonstrate their allegiance by parading behind church banners through their parish, usually with brass band accompanyment. This picture of St James' Whit walk in Butterworth Hall probably took place in the 1870's as they are carrying the old banner which was replaced in1880.
